NYC Seniors and Meals

- Design Research in the Wild

THE OBJECTIVE

Understanding how senior individuals who live by themselves in New York City currently receive their meals to identify opportunities.

THE OUTCOME

Six weeks of extensive research to understand the system of meal delivery services to senior citizens, and two service concepts to supplement Meals on Wheels.

DISCOVERING OUR USERS.

Our team was new to the space of meal delivery services for the elderly in New York City, so we basically started from scratch. Our research was scrappy, and we followed various bread crumbs to finally reach our end users - seniors living by themselves.

Our team began by making an extensive research plan, breaking down the following weeks into milestones that we needed to complete in order to keep ourselves on track. Our first focus was accessing our end users, but we were aware that there were several hoops we had to jump to actually get in front of them.

FINDING INSIGHTS.

Speaking to our various stakeholders, we began finding two deep issues that the seniors face:

  1. Social IsolationIn a day, often a 30-second interaction with a meal deliverer is the only interaction a home-bound senior has.
  2. Quality of MealsThe meals provided by Meals on Wheels are not ethnically diverse, and do not allow for personal preferences.

ZOOMING IN ON SOCIAL ISOLATION.

We became interested in exploring how we leverage Meals on Wheels as a platform to actually alleviate the social isolation seniors that were homebound were facing. The objective of this project was mostly to familiarize ourselves with various research methods - including probes, observational research, intercepts - and then using various synthesis and reframing methods to help us define a core issue. We decided to explore two solutions that may help with the issue of social isolation.

MEALS ON WHEELS - PEN PAL PROGRAM

Using the Meals on Wheels deliverers as our vehicles, we ideated a pen pal program for a senior center that would allow seniors to send and receive letters from within their own community. Every alternate day, the blank letters would be distributed, then collected, and then re-distributed, allowing for a scalable cycle. Upon presenting this idea to a few seniors, they were extremely excited and were more than willing to share their stories.

MEALS ON WHEELS - MEMORIES OF MEALS

Another idea we had, was to collect recipes and associated stories from seniors, and actually compile them into a recipe book. The proceeds from the sales of this would go back into Meals on Wheels, so that higher quality and more diverse meals could be prepared and given to the seniors. We are still in the process of testing the feasibility of this solution.

...

This was an interesting project because we had very little say in choosing the topic we were going to focus on - which presented an interesting challenge in itself. We were largely driven by assumptions in the beginning, because of our unfamiliarity with meal delivery services in NYC. However, this was a wonderful experience of accepting reality as it is and pushing forward with an open and curious mind. We remained steady and didn't abandon the notion that though there was this exceptional service in plan, there could always be a better state.
